Herman Cain, J.C. Watts Stump For Gingrich In Tulsa

The Newt Gingrich "$2.50 Gas Tour" kicked off its Tulsa stop at Joe Momma's in the heart of the Blue Dome District Monday morning.

Former Speaker Newt Gingrich is campaigning in other states, but he had some big names talk with voters here in Tulsa: former presidential candidate Herman Cain and J.C. Watts, the former Oklahoma Congressman and OU quarterback.

Some of the audience members who came to hear the two men speak are still deciding who to support in Tuesday's primary.

Janice Thesenvitz was taking notes.

"Just reminders for me," she said. "These were the things I wanted to verify."

The latest Sooner Poll asked Republican voters who they like best. The results show former Speaker Newt Gingrich trails Rick Santorum by a big margin, and is neck-and-neck with Mitt Romney.

Herman Cain says that's why he's lending his voice to support Gingrich. He sang an a cappella rendition of "America The Beautiful" before putting in a few words about Newt Gingrich. [PLAY VIDEO CLIP ABOVE]

The 2012 campaign trail has seen a surprising amount of singing from candidates, but Herman Cain says only Speaker Gingrich can solve America's big problems.

"Speaker Gingrich not only set a bold target of $2.50 a gallon, but he put a plan on the table to get there. And he knows we can do it," Cain said.

Eufaula native J.C. Watts echoed that message. The former oil and gas regulator says if Speaker Gingrich is elected, energy production in Oklahoma will soar.

"We've got enough energy resources at home that we don't have to be dependent on Middle Eastern oil," Watts told the crowd assembled at Joe Momma's.

Watts says Speaker Gingrich would allow more drilling within American borders, and gas prices will go down.

Watts also touted the former Speaker's track record.

"I'm 54 years old. The only time that Washington has had a balanced budget in my lifetime, Newt Gingrich was Speaker of the House," he said.

The crowd also heard from Jackie Gingrich Cushman, who says her father had retired from a life of public service but feels like being President is his calling.

"He didn't have to run for President," Cushman said. "He has several New York Times bestsellers. Had a very comfortable life. It was very easy. But he knew that our country needed." 

Speaker Gingrich came to Tulsa in person a few weeks ago and spoke at ORU. He's not the only candidate making Oklahoma a priority.

Rick Santorum spoke at ORU a few weeks ago and in Broken Arrow Sunday night.

Both Santorum and Ron Paul have campaign offices in Tulsa.
