I have never been much of an NFL Combine guy. Never cared for it much. I don't necessarily see the value in evaluating players so intensely. Every year these scouts treat players like cattle at the stockyards, meticulously scouring over every minute detail just TRYING to find a flaw.
If Justin Blackmon runs the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds instead of 4.4 seconds, what does that tell you? It tells me he's an EYELASH slower than the guy next to him that ran 4.4. Blackmon's long arms will probably make up for that SNAILS PACE.
If Ronnell Lewis only bench presses 225 pounds a dozen times instead of putting up 15 reps, what does that tell you? It tells me he's still REALLY strong.
I don't think that the vertical leap matters that much. I don't think that the shuttle drill matters that much. I don't think that the long jump matters that much.
What matters to me is how you play on the field in PADS and a helmet, NOT in a pair of underwear and nothing else. By the way, combine participants, put on some clothes. A shirt is not going to slow you down that much.
Can Brandon Weeden throw a slant or a fade route? Can Markelle Martin make the proper read and make an open field tackle? THAT matters to me. Who needs all the poking and prodding?
The NFL is played on the same size field as college football. Watch the film from Saturdays and base your Draft Day selections on what you see on the field, not on the clipboard or stopwatch.
