Balfour was an individual champion for the Redskins in his senior year at Union, later signing to wrestle for the Oklahoma Sooners. He was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia, a form of cancer that begins in the bone marrow, and was hospitalized during the battle.

During his time at Union, Balfour was one of the top wrestlers in the state of Oklahoma, finishing his career at Union ranked in the top 10 of three major statistical categories, including wins with 108.
