A 23-year-old Dewey woman is in jail following her arrest Tuesday for "severe water burns" on a 16-month-old girl.
Dewey Police Sgt. Tim Stringer says Danielle Connor was arrested after officers searched her mobile home in the 500 block of South Osage Monday night.
Conner was booked into the Washington County jail on complaints of child neglect and obstructing an officer.
According to an arrest affidavit, Connor initially told investigators that she was cooking spaghetti when she accidentally knocked a pot of boiling water to the floor where the child was playing.
But her story was not consistent with the type of injuries the 16-month-old child suffered, including 2nd and 3rd degree burns to over 30 percent of her body.
She later changed her story and told officers she left the child alone in a lukewarm bathtub and returned 10 minutes later to find the child screaming and hot water pouring from the spout, according to the affidavit.
The infant was first taken to a Bartlesville hospital then flown by medical helicopter to a Wichita hospital's pediatric burn center where she is listed in serious condition.
Sgt. Tim Stringer declined to comment on the investigation.
Conner is scheduled to be arraigned in Washington County District Court Wednesday afternoon.
