A major news network is reporting that former Oklahoma Congressman JC Watts is expected to endorse GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich Monday.
Watts was the first African-American to serve in a statewide office when he was elected to the state Corporation Commission in 1990.
From there, he was elected to Congress representing the state's fourth district. He served eight years in Congress and during that time he was the chairman of the House Republican Conference.
He served on the House Armed Services Committee, House Select Committee on Homeland Security, the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the House Banking Committee.
NBC News says the endorsement announcement is expected sometime Monday afternoon.
Since leaving Congress, JC Watts started a consulting firm, Watts Partners, an African-American owned lobbying firm in Washington, D.C. The former Eufaula resident is the firm's chairman.
