Kerosene Heater Fire Sparks Tulsa Fire Safety Reminder

A space heater accident is to blame for a fire at a Tulsa home late Tuesday evening. Tulsa Fire was called a house fire in the 100 block of South 91st East Avenue.

Firefighters say the cause was determined to be an accident when during the refueling of the kerosene heater, some of the fuel spilled onto the heating element.

Damage to the home was substantial and one person in the home suffered minor injuries.  

Tulsa Fire says operating this type of space heater inside a home can be dangerous.

TFD reminds residents to never refuel a space heater or generator while it is running or while the engine is still hot. Always allow the engine or heater to cool down for at least 5 minutes to prevent accidental ignition while refueling.

And never operate a non-electric space heater or generator inside the house or garage. The burning of the fuel produces Carbon Monoxide (CO) which is colorless, odorless, toxic, and to often can be deadly.
