The first round of the high school football playoffs was pretty sweet. There were plenty of exciting games and a few dramatic finishes. Oklahoma preps fans deserve that this time of year…
I filled out my brackets before the opening round began for Class 6A down through 3A. I picked Broken Arrow (6A), McAlester (5A), Wagoner (4A) and Cascia Hall (3A) as my eventually champs.
In the first round, I did pretty well on my picks. Of the eight matchups in 6A, I only missed Edmond North's win over Yukon. I, like most people, didn't see Ardmore's upset win over Carl Albert coming from a mile away. Other than that, I got them all right in 5A. I also did pretty well in 4A. I only missed Woodward over Douglass. That was another upset that surprised me based on the type of season the Trojans had.
But, 3A got me. There were 16 first round matchups and I got three of them wrong. I would have bet my house (not that I condone or encourage gambling, ESPECIALLY on high school sports) on Perkins-Tryon over Newcastle. Oops. Purcell lost to Bridge Creek? Oops. Madill beat Tuttle? Oops, again.
All in all, I went 35 for 40 in round one. MUCH better than I usually do in when I fill out my NCAA bracket, I might add. Here are my picks for round two, which begin Friday night all over the state:
