TULSA, Oklahoma -- After edging out Stillwater to open the season, the East Central Cardinals have relied on their defense in the second two weeks and knocked off defending champion Booker T. Washington 17-7 Friday to head into district play on a hot streak.
After a scoreless first quarter, Cardinals' kicker Mitch Mora started the scoring off, booting a 41-yard field goal to move ahead 3-0 with 7:47 left in the first half.
East Central's Chris Harris intercepted a pass on the ensuing drive and Cardinals' quarterback John McDavid connected with Michael Johnson for a 10-yard pass to put them up 10-0 in the second quarter, a lead that held until halftime.
Cardinal running back William Goree broke off a long 25-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to put East Central up 17-0.
The Hornets scored their first offensive touchdown in the fourth quarter with a 55-yard touchdown pass, but those would be the only points Booker T. would score in the game.
East Central moved to 3-0 on the season, heading into their district-opening matchup against the Edison Eagles, while Booker T. Washington will try to notch its first win of the season against Skiatook.
