The 27th annual Dewar baseball tournament was held over the weekend and the No. 16 ranked Henryetta Knights took home the trophy in a 10-7 game over the Preston Pirates Saturday afternoon.

The opening game on Thursday morning featured Depew and Weleetka, Depew rallied from an 8-2 deficit to win 10-8 in eight innings, and for that, the Hornets got to immediately face the Knights.

Henryetta senior pitcher Tyler Brown tossed two strikeouts in the first inning, first baseman Mason Kellett hit a two run homer, and catcher Colt Williams scored Cody Minyard, putting Henryetta on top 3-0 after one inning.

The Hornets got a run, but all three outs in the second came on strikeouts, Kellett, Brown and second baseman Connor Upshaw scored third baseman Nathan Prentiss, left fielder Chase Taylor and center fielder Caul Worlow.

Depew was put out in the third, ten Knights stepped to the plate, nine runs scored, and the 15-1 game ended on a three run home run by shortstop Seba Delocal.

With the win, Henryetta advanced to play the Liberty Tigers in the semifinals, who dropped Kiefer in their first round game. Preston emerged victorious over Oilton 5-1, and Dewar killed Porum 18-3.

In semifinal action, Kellett sent two of the first three Tigers he faced down swinging in the first inning.

Henryetta got a runner on, but he was left stranded. Things looked bad when Liberty first baseman Clay Burt hit a ball to right with a runner on third, but Henryetta right fielder Rush Williams caught the fly and fired it home to Colt Williams, who tagged the runner leaping over him for a demoralizing double play.

Energized by the defense, Upshaw stole home, Prentiss scored Colt and Delocal, and Worlow pounded a home run, giving Henryetta a 5-0 lead. After a bit of trouble, Liberty was put away, which led to a Worlow grand slam.

Kellett’s no-hitter was complete after two strikeouts and a fly ball, the game came to a run-ruled end when Brown crossed home on a Prentiss hit.

The 10-0 shutout put Henryett into the championship Saturday, where it turned out to be against the A No. 9 Preston Pirates, who knocked off the A No. 10 Dewar Dragons 6-0.

The Knights were the visitors this time, they wasted no time in getting on the board. Worlow scored on a Brown base hit, Upshaw got Kellett safely home, and Colt scored Brown.

A great double play stopped Preston, Rush came home on a Kellett double. The Knights again stopped the Pirates in the third inning as Rush and shortstop Hunter Brown made sure Minyard and Tyler Langley scored.

Preston right fielder Leland Wilson stole home, getting his team on the scoreboard. Preston switched pitchers, and Kellett stole home, Langley scored after Rush was walked.

Three straight grounders ended the fourth inning with the Knights ahead 8-1.

More runs were added in the fifth, Kellett again stole home, and Delocal got Tyler Brown across home plate. What looked to end as another run-ruled contest became a ballgame again after Preston catcher Blake Nuckolls hit an inside the park grand slam, the last two outs followed quickly. Facing the Pirates’ fourth pitcher of the day, Prentiss replaced Delocal on the mound, the lead narrowed to 10-7. Henryetta was shut down, and the tension broke as a 10-7 game wrapped up, with Henryetta winning the tournament after coming up short to Dewar a year ago.

Colt Willliams was not only named the tournament MVP but was also named to the all-tournament team along with Tyler Brown, Kellett and Worlow.

Also making the All-Tournament team are Preston’s Bodie King, Trevor Thorman and Robert Wynn, and Ross Britt and Ethan Morrison of Dewar.

Henryetta plays in the Liberty Tournament this weekend, the Knights won it last year by destroying Kiefer 13-1 in three innings.
