The 2011 high school basketball playoffs have begun, and for Henryetta, they got off to a very good start.
The Knights won 41-39 over Eufaula on a pair of free throws in the last minute, and the Lady Knights used a late rush to drop the Lady Ironheads 52-33 Saturday night.
The first quarter of the boys game started slowly, Henryetta led 3-1 halfway through the first quarter and by its end Henryetta was ahead 10-9 playing without one of their starters Guy Kiehl, who left the team.
The good play continued, and the Knights lead was 20-14 at halftime. Great defense gave Henryetta a 28-19 lead, but the fast-paced Ironheads closed quickly to end the third quarter tied at 28-all.
The tension in the building rose steadily throughout the fourth quarter, but some of the nerves were loosened by a pickle being thrown onto the court. With 6.6 seconds to go, sophomore guard Damon Mouss was fouled, he sank two free throws to make it 41-39.
Eufaula’s last-ditch effort failed, and the Knights sent the 3A No. 13 Ironheads to the losers’ bracket. Mouss had 18 points, junior forward Joe Moudy scored 12, just missing a double-double and freshman forward Chet Caywood added nine points.
In the girls game, Eufaula scored quickly but Henryetta went on a 8-0 run. The Lady Ironheads led 14-12 after the first eight minutes.
A low scoring second quarter brought halftime with Eufaula leading 22-18. The Henryetta offense started clicking in the third quarter, the Lady Knights reeled off 13 unanswered points to gain a 33-27 advantage that grew during the fourth quarter.
The 3A No. 6 Lady Knights won their first playoff game by a 52-33 score. Sophomore Lauren Flanary led the offense by scoring 15 points, sophomore Miranda Harjo had 14 while senior Heather Konsure and junior Ashton Peters both had six.
Regional games will be held in Henryetta on Thursday, the play starts at 1:30 p.m. when the Eufaula girls face Antlers and the Eufaula boys go against Holdenville at 3 p.m.
For both of the games, it is single elimination meaning the season is over for the losing team.
At 6:30 p.m. the Henryetta girls go up against Holdenville, and the finale is at 8 p.m. between the Henryetta and Antlers boys. More Regional games will be held Friday and Saturday in Antlers.
