BIXBY, Oklahoma – Davisis headed to the 2A state championship game after a convincing 40-7 win over Colcord. The Wolves used key turnovers and big plays in the second half to pull away from the Hornets.
The game was close for most of the first half, but Jordan Webb punched in a short touchdown run late in the second quarter to give Davis a 14-0 lead.
Colcord had two chances to get back into the game, but both drives ended in turnovers. Quarterback Canaan Sherrell led the team deep into Davis territory in the final seconds of the first half, but a fumble on fourth down ended that drive.
After Zac Maynard scored on a 41-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 20-0, Sherrell again was able to make plays with his arms and legs, and Colcord found itself in the redzone. However, that drive also ended without points as Sherrell was interacepted in the endzone by Chance Griffin.
Colcord was really never in the game after that. Davis drove back down the field and got another touchdown run from Maynard to go up 28-0. Later in the third quarter, Matt Burba delivered the play of the game: a long punt return for a touchdown that sent the Davis fans into a frenzy.
Davis will meet the Hennessey Eagles, who upset unbeaten Millwood, for the state championship next weekend.
