Class B Top Games to Watch: Week 2

Oklahoma Sports breaks down the top games to watch in the second round.

OKLAHOMA CITY – With only four games in the second round – and incredible matchups at that – it seems quite tough and arbitrary to choose the Top 3 Games of the week.

All four games feature pairs of teams ranked in the Oklahoma Sports/CoachesAid.com Top 10 for Class B.

However, the Dewar Dragons have been unstoppable all season and show no signs of slowing up any time soon.

The Dragons blew by Summit Christian 48-7 in the first round while their first round opponent, Fox, had a relatively closer (by Class B standards) 66-44 win.

Fox is capable of beating Dewar, but it’s the most likely of the four second-round matchups to produce a lopsided result.

The top three matchups of the week are sure to produce some exciting football as the playoffs begin to narrow down even further:

1.) Laverne at Kiefer– When two trains run toward each other on a single track, something has to give. As is the case with two of the most powerful teams in Class B. Friday’s game between the Laverne Tigers and the Kiefer Trojans promises all the drama and explosiveness a high school playoff game could ever offer.

Both teams are riding astonishing winning streaks into the matchup – Laverne nine games and Kiefer 10. Both teams have been putting up big points and blowing out the opposition as the season progresses. And both teams put up impressive shutouts in the first round: Laverne beat Alex 46-0 and Kiefer took down Gans 37-0.

It’s almost a shame that one of these two beastly teams’ seasons has to end on Friday, but then again, games like this are what high school football is all about.

2.) Wetumka at Davenport – This game presents an interesting matchup in that both teams are highly ranked but cut their first round games a little too close for comfort.Davenport allowed Seiling to hang around the entire game in a four-point victory while Wetumka held off Welch, 42-34.

The Davenport Bulldogs are another team with a massive winning streak entering round two. Davenport dropped its first game of the season against Dewar but has since rattled off 10 straight, scoring 30 or more in each game.

The Wetumka Chieftains share a similar loss, also falling to Dewar on the season. But Wetumka also had a loss to Gans and several close calls throughout the year. Wetumka is capable of going off at any second, however and will surely provide an intense matchup against Davenport.

3.) Caddo at Cherokee – Cherokee has done nothing but prove itself the entire season – after all, you can’t get any better than perfection (11-0 so far). But as the stage gets bigger and the field gets smaller, a team proving itself becomes even more difficult and significant. The Chiefs haven’t truly been challenged this season, for their closest opponent was only able to stay within 20 points. But Caddo could be their toughest opponent this season.

The Bruins had a loss against Dewar this season (who didn’t?), but also handed Kiefer its only loss and looked unstoppable at times. Whoever wins will both make a statement and take plenty of momentum with them heading into the semifinals.
