OKLAHOMA CITY -- After a more than two-hour rain delay and a child birth in the parking lot, the Bishop McGuinness Irish and the Douglass Trojans kicked off their 2010 campaigns Thursday.
Just minutes before the clock struck midnight, the Irish notched their first win of the season 9-7 over the Trojans.
Douglass (0-1) jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, but Bishop McGuinness (1-0) responded with nine unanswered points, including a field goal before going into the locker room at halftime leading 9-7.
The Trojans trailed by two for most of the second half, but threatened with less than three minutes on the clock. Their long drive was thwarted when quarterback Shon Bridges rolled right on an option; sophomore linebacker Danny Krenger forced the fumble and Brandon Nguyen recovered to end the drive.
Douglass out-gained Bishop McGuinness by 79 total yards -- including 65 yards on the ground -- and racked up eight more first downs, but three turnovers halted any momentum the Trojans created.
The Trojans have another tough test next week against the Millwood Falcons, while Bishop McGuinness will host the Bishop Kelley Comets.
