OKLAHOMA CITY – The Guthrie Bluejays finished the 2009 season strong and advanced to the state semifinals, but are hoping for even more success this year.
The Bluejays started last season with a relatively inexperienced core of players, and it showed early in the season. They lost their first two games of the season and seemed to be in immediate trouble.
But head coach Rafe Watkins said at Oklahoma Sports Media Day Saturday that his players did not take their opening losses too hard and that he was proud of the way they persevered.
Guthrie recovered to win six of its final eight regular season games and earn a spot in the playoffs, where it squeaked out wins on the road against Duncan and East Central.
As was the case last year, standout athlete Kentrell Brothers will lead the Bluejays on both sides of the ball. Brothers will play receiver and defensive end, and has garnered attention from Division I colleges across the nation.
