It’s the perfect storm. It’s that time of the year. We have a month before the bowl game. We’re not serious about talking basketball just yet. It’s getting too cold to drive to the beach. In short, radio talk show topics are scarce on the Tallahassee airwaves. And today Urban Meyer resigned, again.

But please, don’t stir false hope in the minds of your listeners. Bob Stoops is not going anywhere.

I’m not even factoring in the fact that he’s building a new, beautiful home in Norman. Stoops could do the same in Florida.

Or the fact he has three kids, ages 11, 11 and 14 who would be devastated at leaving school in Norman to make new friends and start anew in Tallahassee. Although, as a father of 3, I know it would be a huge factor in any decision.

Let’s look at it from just a job standpoint. Why would you leave one of the top 7 jobs in the country for another? Would Bill Belichick leave the Patriots to go coach the Cowboys? Would Mike Krzyzewski leave Duke to go coach at UCLA?

With the talent the Sooners have returning next season, they’ll be top 5 in the preseason. Florida will not.

In the Big 12, you have to beat Texas and the Big 12 North champion to go to a BCS title game. The SEC is loaded with Alabama, LSU, Auburn and whatever other snakepit you are taking your team to this Saturday.

Stoops presides over a program that has had far more long-term success in a conference that’s easier to win. He works for a president and athletic director who have his back every time and who he loves working for. And OU can offer just as much financially as Florida can.

We always hear, “but Bob is beloved at Florida.” And he’s not in Norman? “But Bob loved it at Florida.” He was there for three years. He’s been in Norman for 12.

We are all guilty of thinking the place we live is the best place in the country. If it wasn’t, why would I live here? People in Tallahassee are no different. They can’t imagine that a person would rather live in Norman than Tallahassee. They have the beach within an hour, Disney within two hours and an average daily temperature of 80 degrees.

Many of us can’t imagine leaving Oklahoma for a place with hurricanes, excessive humidity and housing costs that might be double what they are in our state.

I know that if I was hosting a sports talk show in Tallahassee I would probably do the same thing. But Bob Stoops has ignored the call to The Swamp on two previous occasions. There’s no reason for him to pick up the phone this time around.

May 26th, 2011
