WICHITA, Kan. – OSU couldn’t rebound from a rough weekend, dropping a 6-5 contest at Wichita State on Tuesday.
The 19th-ranked Cowboys faced Wichita State 10 days earlier in Stillwater, winning a 5-3 decision.
But the Shockers’ offense was much more potent this time around, racking up 12 hits in the game.
OSU actually started off the game strong, belting out three runs on a ground out, a double and a single to take an early lead.
Oklahoma State scored again in the fifth, but by the end of the inning, WSU had rallied with the help of a two-run homer from Johnny Coy to take a 5-4 lead.
OSU’s Gabe Weidenaar took over at pitcher in the eighth, but immediately sent a wild pitch past the plate, allowing Tyler Grimes to score and increase the Shockers’ lead.
The Cowboys had a chance to rally in the ninth, with Nico Rosthenhausler scoring on an RBI single from Jared Womack.
But OSU left the tying and winning runs stranded to end the game.
Zach Beringer got the win for Wichita State, pitching four inning and giving up three hits.
Vince Wheeland was credited with the loss in just one-third of an inning.
Oklahoma State will start a series with Kansas State in Stillwater this weekend. Friday’s first pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
