DALLAS – The Golden Hurricane bench picked a perfect game to explode for more than half of Tulsa’s points.
As Tulsa edged out Southern Methodist 74-66 on Saturday afternoon at Moody Coliseum, the TU bench scored 38 to pick up a crucial win on the road.
The Golden Hurricane used a balanced scoring attack, led by 17 from Jordan Clarkson off the bench. Clarkson played 29 minutes and shot 6-of-9.
TU led most of the game, including a 34-29 halftime margin, before going ahead for good early in the second half.
A hook shot from D.J. Magley gave the Golden Hurricane its largest lead of the night at 12 points with 11:51 remaining.
But SMU rallied back to make it exciting at the end. The Mustangs’ Papa Dia made a layup with just more than three minutes left to bring his team to within 64-61.
The Golden Hurricane managed a 10-4 run after that to pull away and pick up their second straight win.
Tulsa shot an impressive 50 percent from the floor and managed to outrebound Southern Methodist 34-25.
Justin Hurtt scored 14 for TU, and Kodi Maduka and former Jenks forward Bryson Pope both reached double digits as well.
The Golden Hurricane will travel to Marshall on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. tipoff.
