CHARLESTON, West Virginia -- According to the Tulsa World, Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen will take over as the West Virginia offensive coordinator in 2011 and replace head coach Bill Stewart in 2012.
Stewart took over the Mountaineers before the 2008 Fiesta Bowl when Rich Rodriguez left to take the Michigan head coaching job before West Virginia’s bowl game. Stewart was named the interim head coach and led the Mountaineers to a upset win over the then-ranked No. 3 Oklahoma Sooners.
He was announced as West Virginia’s head coach then following day.
Furthermore, The Austin American-Statesman is reporting that Holgorsen will sign a six-year deal with WVU; one year as offensive coordinator, then five years as head coach.
It was originally rumored that Holgorsen was the top candidate for the head coaching job and rival Pittsburgh.
Holgorsen joined the Oklahoma State coaching staff in January 2010 after a two-year stint as offensive coordinator at the University of Houston from 2008-2009.
Holgorsen and WVU athletic director Oliver Luck were in Houston during the same time frame while Luck was the president of the Major League Soccer team the Houston Dynamo from 2005-June 2010. Luck was also the Chief Executive Officer of the Houston Sports Authority beginning in 2001.
What Oklahoma Sports can confirm:
Oklahoma Sports Sports Director John Holcomb confirmed that Holgorsen is at work in Stillwater, with the Cowboys heading to team meetings at 2 p.m. followed by a regularly-scheduled practice. The only day this week that OSU players and coaches are available to the media is Friday. West Virginia media outlets have contacted Oklahoma State, but the program is remaining silent on the subject.
Oklahoma Sports will update as details become available.
