Tulsa, Oklahoma--Sean Sutton will be back on the hardwood, this time as an advisor for the coaching staff at Oral Roberts University.
In a special announcement made Thursday, ORU President Mark Rutland announced Sean’s new position with the Golden Eagles.
“He is a gifted and very experienced coach and he will be a great help to us,” said Rutland.
Sean’s brother Scott Sutton is the head coach at ORU and is looking forward to the opportunity to work with his brother.
“It’s a great day for ORU basketball and for me personally,” said Scott.
Sean’s official title will be Executive Advisor to the basketball staff and he will help with practice, in breaking down film and will be on the bench to make suggestions to the coaching staff.
“I’m excited to be here, I’ll work hard and do my best to help Scott in any way? and hopefully get back to the NCAA tournament,” said Sean who went on to say “I’ve missed basketball, and I have struggled as most of you know, and part of that is because I wasn’t connected with basketball.”
On August 13, Sean Sutton pleaded guilty to felony drug charges and was sentenced to 115 days in a rehabilitation center and a three-year deferred sentence. The charges stem from his addiction to prescription painkillers, which he sought treatment for.
Sean Sutton was head basketball coach at Oklahoma State before resigning after the 2007-08 season. He was head coach of the Cowboys for two seasons and finished with a record of 39-29.
“It’s an exciting day for me and my family, I’ve always had great respect for Oral Roberts and their basketball program,” said Sean.
Oral Roberts opens the season in an exhibition game against Drury Nov. 2 at 7:05 p.m.
