OKLAHOMA CITY -- After Kevin Durant announced his signing via Twitter Wednesday, the Oklahoma City Thunder announced Thursday that the star forward had signed a multi-year contract extension.
Team rules dictate that they do not discuss contract details, but Durant said yesterday that the deal would be a five-year extension.
“Today is an exciting and important day in the growth of the Thunder organization,” said Okalhoma City general manger Sam Presti in a press release. “Kevin’s consistent work ethic, humility, team-first mentality and strong community investment are just some of the reasons that today’s commitments stretch beyond our franchise and throughout our community and the entire state of Oklahoma.”
In the 2009-2010 season, Durant averaged a league-leading 30.1 points per game and 7.6 rebounds, en route to leading Oklahoma City to a 27-game improvement over previous season. In his three seasons with the franchise, Durant averages 25.3 points and 6.2 rebounds in 37.7 minutes per game and in the 2009-2010 season started all 82 games.
“I am excited to remain a part of the Thunder organization and the Oklahoma City community,” said Durant. “This is a big day for my family and myself. I would like to thank God for putting me in this position, the Thunder for believing in me since I was drafted and my teammates for supporting and encouraging me everyday.”
This follows the Thunder’s announcement early Thursday afternoon that they had secured the rights to rookie Cole Aldrich and Morris Peterson after draft-day trades.
