CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia -- Oklahoma is two wins away from the program’s 10th College World Series appearance. Standing in the Sooners way is No. 5 seed Virginia. The Sooners and Cavaliers will hit the field in the best-of-three NCAA Super Regional at 2 p.m. Saturday on ESPNU
OU comes in on a hot-streak having won nine of its last 10. The Sooners are looking to capitalize on that momentum heading into this weekend’s series.
“I feel after scouting and knowing our team that we’re going to have a champion come out of this Charlottesville super regional that is going to represent this super regional in a first class manner and have a great chance at a national championship,” OU head coach Sonny Golloway said.
The No. 1 Cavaliers defeated St. John’s 5-3 Monday to win the Charlottesville Regional. Virginia entered the NCAA Tournament ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in each of the four major polls and finished first in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Cavaliers made their first appearance in the College World Series in 2009.
“Oklahoma’s got a very, very good baseball team this year,” Virginia head coach Brian O’Connor said. “Their program is rich in tradition, and as Sonny said earlier the winner that comes out of this regional will do very well in Omaha.”
Sunday’s game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m., on ESPN. Monday’s finale is slated for either noon or 6 p.m. on ESPN2.
