SHREVEPORT, Louisiana -- Oral Roberts suffered its second straight double-digit loss at the hands of Centenary falling 17-7 in first game of Saturday's Summit League doubleheader. The second game was called in the fifth inning due to wet field conditions and will resume at 11:30 a.m. Sunday.
Game 1: Centenary 17, Oral Roberts 7
Centenary racked up an impressive 19 hits in the opening contest of Saturday's double-header as eight Gents put together a multi-hit game.
Centenary went up 3-0 in the first inning. A triple by Cliff Shepard scored two runs and he would cross the plate later in the inning.
Oral Roberts would go on to make it a 3-1 game after a solo shot from pitcher Seth Furmanek. The Golden Eagles could no capitalize with the a bases loaded in the second.
The Gents would put together a three-run inning in the latter half on four hits. An Oral Roberts' error would put Centenary on top 6-1.
The Golden Eagles would fight their way back and tie the game on four hits, including a three-run home run by Nick Baligod.
But an eight-run third made the biggest impact in the game as Centenary connected on nine hits.
Oral Roberts would add a run in the sixth, but Centenary responded with two more runs in the bottom half of thet inning.
Ahead 16-7 and a chance to give the Golden Eagles another run-rule, the Gents would connect on three hits in the seventh, as Sheppard crossed the plate for the 17th run.
Junior right-hander Derek Dalzell earned the win in relief after entering tossing 2.1 innings of work, allowing one run on three hits to improve to 2-2 on the season.
Furmanek suffered the loss, surrendering 10 runs on 10 hits in just 2.2 innings of work.
Game 2: To resume on Sunday at 11:30 am
Oral Roberts had a 4-1 lead over Centenary in the top of the fifth inning when the call was made to resume on Sunday.
Centenary and Oral Roberts will meet in the final game of the series on Sunday at noon.
