LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech defeated No. 11 Oklahoma 8-3 Sunday to take the three-game weekend series.
The Red Raiders (20-19, 8-7) started quickly, scoring five runs in the first inning. Kevin Whitehead’s three-run homer capped the big inning for Texas Tech. Whitehead finished 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs.
Tech scored runs in the second and fourth inning to take a 7-0 lead.
Chris Ellison crossed the plate in the top of the fifth to give the Sooners (26-10, 6-7) their first run of the day. Ellison hit a two-run double in the next inning to cut Oklahoma’s deficit to 7-3. Ellison went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs.
But that was a close as the Sooners would get. Tech scored an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-3 lead.
Jeremy Erben (6-1) was tagged with the loss for the Sooners after giving up seven earned runs in 3.1 innings. Chad Bettis (6-3) earned the win after throwing four scoreless innings.
The Sooners return to the field when they host TCU at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday.
