LOS ANGELES - Oklahoma State lost its first game of the season Sunday, falling 7-6 to No. 30 Vanderbilt at the Dodgertown Classic.
The Cowboys got the tying run on in the bottom of the ninth inning when Dusty Harvard singled to lead off the frame, but he failed to advance as OSU fell to 1-1 on the season.
Davis Duren, Dean Green and Nico Rosthenhausler led the Cowboys' offense with two hits apiece, while Thomas Keeling suffered the loss on the mound after lasting just 1.2 innings.
OSU fell behind early as Vanderbilt tagged Keeling for three runs in the opening frame.
The Cowboys answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first. Duren led off with a single and promptly stole second, then took third on a throwing error by the catcher. Then Kevin David delivered a sacrifice fly to right field to bring Duren home and make the score 3-1.
Vandy (6-1) continued its scoring surge in the second inning, and again it was Westlake doing the damage as he blasted a two-run home run to right field to put the Commodores up by a 5-1 count. Curt Casali followed Westlake with a double, ending Keeling's day.
OSU would respond in the bottom of the fourth, when they mounted a three-run rally. Tom Belza led off the inning with a single and after a walk and an error loaded the bases, then Green ripped a single through the right side to bring home two runs.
Rosthenhausler scored from third on a double play, cutting the Vandy lead to one run.
In the sixth, the Commodores tallied two more runs. Vandy loaded the bases against Matt Klein before Andrew Heaney came in and uncorked a wild pitch to bring home VU's sixth run. Heaney then walked two-straight batters to push OSU's deficit to 7-4.
Still trailing 7-4, OSU got back on the scoreboard in the eighth with a two-out rally, but that is as close as the Cowboys would get.
