NORMAN, Oklahoma – Tulsa did everything a team cannot do when trying to pull off an upset against the 11th ranked Oklahoma Sooners. The Golden Hurricane turned the ball over three times, committed more than 100 yards in penalties, and missed a field goal. The 45-0 loss marks the first Tulsa’s been shut out since 2004.
The lone ray of hope dulled quickly for the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. DeAundre Brown picked off Landry Jones first pass and returned it to the Sooners 39-yard line, but the Golden Hurricane went three-and-out. Then the Hurricane offense blew itself off course. TU got the ball inside the Oklahoma 15-yard line twice and came away with nothing to show for it.
TU’s offense entered OU territory four times in the first half but turned the ball over twice and came away with zero points. G.J. Kinne threw an interception in the end zone and lost a fumble. Kevin Fitzpatrick missed a 50-yard field goal and Tulsa took all three timeouts in first quarter.
All three quarterbacks saw action but neither Jacob Bower nor Shavodrick Beaver led a scoring drive. Nobody in the trio of signal-callers finished with a completion rate above 50%. Kinne was held to -22 rushing yards on 11 carries.
The Golden Hurricane offense never developed a rhythm and looked like a far cry from the team thathas led the nation in offense the last two seasons. TU should be able to get back on track by hosting FCS Sam Houston State in the first home game of the season.
Meanwhile Oklahoma looked like a well-oiled machine. Landry Jones finished with a FBS freshman record six touchdown passes. Demarco Murray got into the end zone on a highlight reel swing pass, spinning off a tackle and leaping into across the goal line. The Sooners doubled Tulsa’s yardage in the first quarter and took a 31-0 lead at the half.
OU tacked on 14 more points in the third quarter and cruised in from there. The Sooners get a bye week before taking on #19 Miami.
