Corps Of Engineers Decides To Leave Toppled Crane In Kaw Lake

KAW LAKE, Oklahoma -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has decided not to try to remove a crane that fell into the waters of Kaw Lake earlier this year.

The crane fell off the dam on January 6th, 2011.

The accident happened while a crew was working on one of the gates at the dam.  The crane, which is owned by the Corps, tipped over as it was lifting a piece of equipment on the top of the dam.  The operator climbed out of the cab before the crane slid into the water and he was not hurt.

The dam sustained minor damage.

A spokesman for the Corps says it's not worth the risk to try to remove the crane from the water.  He says it's too dangerous for divers to approach the crane because it's so close to the dam.
