TULSA, Oklahoma -- A Tulsa church honored couples who've been married 50 years or more Sunday. And they say their time together has just begun.
"How did we make it last so long?" asked Albert Meyer. "I don't know, I've been trying to figure that out! I really don't know!" Replied Albert's wife Ruth.
Al and Ruth Meyer have been going strong for 67 years. They are members of Asbury United Methodist Church where they were recognized for their long lasting love.
A milestone this church believes in celebrating
"Our pastor Tom Harrison really believes in honoring people who have been married a long time. The Bible says we should honor marriage, marriage should be honored by all," said Charlene Giles, Director of Care & Marriage at Asbury.
219 were honored Sunday for being married 50 or more years. The pastor says, in total, there were celebrating 1,311 years in marriage.
We asked some of the couples their secrets to success.
"Don't go to bed mad at one another... if you have any arguments settle it before you go to bed," the Meyers said.
"Go to church and pray together..." said Ray Miller, married 60 years."And don't even think about, I mean we never thought about divorce at all. Murder maybe, but not divorce!" Said Ray's wife Ada.
And they say getting recognized in the church for this achievement sets a great example for young couples and for themselves.
"An incentive try and make it another year, a year without any problems" Ray said.
"Yeah, I don't mean that we didn't have problems, everybody has problems, we were able to work through it," Ada said.
It takes hard work, but they say it's definitely worth it.
