TULSA, OK -- A regular customer used an irregular way to get french fries from the Whataburger at 5700 E. 41st Street at about 1 a.m. Thursday.
Tulsa police say a man came into the Whataburger, ordered french fries, then said he didn't have the money to pay for them.
"When the clerk said he couldn't have the fries, he pulled out a large machete type knife," said Sergeant Clay Ballenger of the Tulsa Police Department.
The customer told the clerk to open the register and give him all the money.
"The clerk asked him if he was serious, and the guy said, 'yes, sorry I have to do this,'" Ballenger said.
The clerk said he could not open the safe and suggested the customer just "take the fries and be done with it."
"He took the fries, put the machete up and walked out of the Whataburger," Ballenger said.
Police were searching for a black male, 19 to 20 years old, about 6'1" in height with a slim build. He was wearing a white T-shirt, long blue jogging shorts and white tennis shoes. The man has long hair that was pulled behind his head in a braid or dread locks, the officer said.
"Apparently he's a regular customer here," Ballenger said. "Although he didn't get away with the money, he was armed, and it's a very serious crime."
