MUSKOGEE COUNTY -- The U.S. Army honored a Stillwater battalion Wednesday.

The Secretary of the Army honored 165 soldiers from the Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 179th Infantry with the Meritorious Unit Commendation award.  The award is based on the overall performance of a unit while deployed for at least six months.

"We've asked a lot of these soldiers and leaders over the past years," said Major General Myles Deering, Oklahoma Adjutant General.  "They continue to step up to the plate and they continue to perform just as their counterparts on the active duty side."

The 179th served in southern Iraq for a year in 2008.  The company is scheduled to deploy again next year to Afghanistan.
