TULSA, OK -- The idea of a west Tulsa turnpike moved a step closer to reality on Tuesday when Governor Brad Henry signed HB 3220 into law.
The measure authorizes the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority to begin a feasibility study of creating a new turnpike beginning at I-44 at 49th West Avenue running north across the Arkansas River east of Sand Springs and then turning east and connecting with the Tisdale Expressway.
The proposed path is part of the extension of the Gilcrease Expressway from north Tulsa to I-44.
Tulsa Mayor Dewey Bartlett said last week the idea of a west Tulsa turnpike would be good news for that area of Tulsa.
The proposal would mean a new bridge over the Arkansas River east of the state Highway 97 Bridge in Sand Springs.
