PAYNE COUNTY -- A teenage driver who told troopers he was trying to run over a squirrel is in serious condition at OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City after wrecking his car near Stillwater.
According to a report by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, 18-year-old Cameron Cook was driving eastbound on State Highway 33 in Payne County Thursday morning when he "attempted to run over a squirrel crossing the road." The OHP says Cook lost control of his 2002 Acura which left the roadway to the left, went into a broad slide and rolled one time.
Cook, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown 18 feet from the vehicle.
The teen was transported to Stillwater Medical Center with head, trunk and other injuries then taken by medical helicopter to Oklahoma City where he was listed in serious condition.
The trooper reports that the cause of the wreck was unsafe speed on a curve.
