ROGERS COUNTY -- A Rogers County girl's knowledge of the Constitution has gained her big honors, and now she'll represent Oklahoma in a national competition.

Kristalynn Hefner is a junior at Chelsea High School. She won a statewide, American Legion speech contest.

Her speech about the freedoms given to us in the Constitution and how some people take those freedoms for granted, won her the competition and $1,000 in scholarship money.

She'll now represent the Sooner State in the national American Legion competition in Indianapolis next Friday.

"It just started as this small project in my creative writing class and now its nationals and it's kind of like, ‘whoa,' you know? It's kind of overwhelming at first," said Hefner.

Hefner could win more scholarship money depending on how far she makes it at nationals. The grand prize is $18,000 in scholarships.
