TULSA---The University of Tulsa today hosted fifth-graders from several local elementary schools for Revolutionary Days, a program designed to promote knowledge about George Washington and the American Revolution.
‘The students can dress up as the revolutionary people,' said Jan McClaren, Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens George Washington Ambassador to the State of Oklahoma, ‘we have Ben Franklin here, we have Martha Washington, we have the Lyric Theatre who is doing the 1776 interactive, which is based on the play 1776.'
Fifth-grader Allie Verner received a greater appreciation for the sacrifices of the Founding fathers during today's program.
‘They had a lot of courage,' said Allie, ‘because signing the declaration was a pretty big responsibility because they could be killed.'
Teachers Beth Howard, Dessa Webber and Debby Venable all applied for the program to be brought to the students of northeast Oklahoma, and hope to expand the numbers of children who can see it each year.
‘It's about teaching American history and the importance of freedom to our students here in northeastern Oklahoma,' said Beth.
The event is supported by a grant from the Oklahoma Humanities Council.
