OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Oklahoma Corporation Commission is delaying a decision on how a new area code for parts of eastern Oklahoma will be implemented.

The area now served by the 918 area code is expected to run out of telephone numbers sometime in 2012. An administrative law judge is recommending an overlay in which a new area code would be set over the existing area code territory.

Commissioner Bob Anthony voted for the overlay as did Commissioner Jeff Cloud. But when Commissioner Dana Murphy voted against it, Cloud quickly withdrew his vote and Anthony called a recess.

After the recess the commission voted 3-0 to schedule the issue for a public deliberation at a later date to consider the benefits of a geographic split for the new area code.
