TULSA, OK -- A 37-year-old man remains in a Tulsa hospital after he was shot several times by a police officer late Thursday night.

The man is identified as Steven Crowels.

Tulsa Police say the incident started just after 11 p.m. Thursday when officer Jay Chiarito-Mazzarella noticed a driver throwing something out his car window in the 1200 block of North Allegheny.

When the officer tried to stop the vehicle, the driver took off.

Police say Crowels eventually drove into a neighborhood, lost control and crashed into a parked pick-up truck at East Oklahoma and North Urbana Avenue.

"As the officer gets out of the vehicle, commanding the occupants to show them their hands, the driver puts the vehicle in reverse, attempts to back into the officer, officer fires several shots inside the vehicle," said Tulsa Police officer Leland Ashley.

Crowels was shot several times.

Tulsa Police say Crowels' vehicle was occupied by two additional individuals, a 17-year-old male and a 13-year-old male.

Both were taken to TPD's Detective Division for questioning.
