OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- People enrolled in the Women, Infants and Children nutrition program in Oklahoma are now able to obtain healthier foods under the federal voucher and education program.
Federal, state and tribal officials visited a Homeland grocery store Wednesday to tout the changes to the low-income program, which has about 102,000 people enrolled in Oklahoma.
Among the foods that now can be obtained using the WIC program are fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables and whole grain options such as bread, brown rice or soft corn or whole wheat tortillas.
The state WIC program also has coordinated with nine American Indian tribes that also offer WIC programs to develop the same food card, which state Department of Health officials say will help grocers.
