JENKS, OK -- Students from Regent Preparatory School had a chance to experience the lives of American pioneers at Pioneer Day today.

"All year long we've been studying westward expansion," explained second-grade teacher Lesa Johnson.  "The things that they have read about and studied they get to see in action they get to be a part of it. They're getting a little taste of pioneer life from authentic food to authentic experiences."

The students dressed in traditional garb, fished with bamboo poles, rode a horse and had a chance to live the less-hurried life of American pioneers.

"They just had a lot of chores," said Elligrace Nauman, "but the kids had some time that they got to play."

Teachers at Regent said the experience made the pioneer life come real for the students.

"They want to know what it was like, and they want to go through those experiences," said Johnson.
