TULSA, OK -- Millions of identities were stolen across the country last year, and some local businesses want to make sure Tulsans aren't added to the list.

The News On 6 and the Better Business Bureau were among the companies that teamed up for Shredfest, a free event where people could take their personal information to Shredders Inc. to be destroyed and recycled.

"It's to prevent identify theft, to keep you from identify theft," said Randy Gwartney, president of Shredders Inc. "You don't know what the disaster is from identify theft. It goes on and on, and you sometimes can never get rid of it."

The company shredded more than six tons of documents during their last event and hoped to shred that record Saturday.

Read what documents you should shred and when you should shred them.
