NATIONAL WEATHER SUMMARY:

Over the eastern half of the country the most exciting weather was across Florida where severe thunderstorms moved across the northern peninsula during the morning hours ahead of a cold front. Straight line winds caused several trees and power lines to fall down with some minor structural damage. A tornado was reported north of the Tampa area, near Pasco, Florida with damage reported in a housing subdivision. Thunderstorms weakened through the day as they spread through central and southern areas of the state. It was hot across southeast Florida ahead of the rain with a new record high for Miami at 91 and a record tying high at West Palm Beach at 90. To the north, thunderstorms moved across the eastern Carolinas during the afternoon hours producing hail in some areas. Slow moving low pressure system continued to produce low clouds and rain from the lower Great Lakes to the upper Ohio Valley and Mid Atlantic region. Some areas between southern Michigan and the Delmarva region received over an inch of rain during the day. High pressure dominated the region between the Mississippi River and the Rockies with warm and dry weather. High temperatures reached into the 70s as far north as Bismarck, North Dakota during the afternoon hours.

In the West, winter just does not want to go away as a strong cold front brought snow to the mountains of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, western Montana and northern Nevada. Winter storm warnings have been posted for much of the Intermountain West region from southwest Montana through Nevada and Utah where snow will continue over the next couple of days producing one to two feet of snow in areas above 7000ft. Several inches of snow also will continue over northern Nevada with snow levels falling to below 4000ft. In addition to all the rain and snow, gusty winds were felt across much of the west. Wind gusts of 30-50 mph were common along the California coast and also into southern California, southern Nevada and northern Arizona. In the wake of the cold front, high temperatures were 10-20 degrees below average over most of the Pacific Northwest including Sunnyside, WA which tied a record low of 29.

ON THIS DATE IN HISTORY:

In 1958, a tornado tore a five mile path near Frostproof, FL. The 300 yard wide tornado blew a 2500 water tank one mile from its position before the storm.

In 1987, severe thunderstorms along a cold front produced a tornado which killed a person near Mount Dora, FL. Thunderstorms along same front produced 7 inches of rain in Myrtle Beach, SC in three hours and hail drifts to two feet in parts of NC.

In 1988, a rare late season storm dropped into southern CA producing snow in the mountains. Death Valley, CA which averages about 2 inches of rain a year recorded 1.53 inches of rain in a 24-hour period.
