OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Oklahoma City police say a man has died after two officers fired at him after he took out a gun and fired in their direction.

Police Capt. Steve McCool says officers went to check on the welfare of the man at a north Oklahoma City home Monday afternoon and found him on the porch with self-inflicted wounds from a knife.

McCool identified the man as 56-year-old Fred Hibbert. McCool says that as officers engaged Hibbert in conversation, Hibbert produced a handgun and fired at the officers.

McCool says officers then fired at Hibbard and hit him. Hibbard was taken to an Oklahoma City hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Neither officer was injured and both will be placed on routine administrative leave.
