OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Sen. Jim Inhofe will introduce a bill to prohibit the transfer of detainees at Guantanamo Bay to any facility in the United States.
The Oklahoma Republican says he plans to introduce the measure in the U.S. Senate on Tuesday. It would prohibit the use of funds to transfer detainees anywhere in the U.S.
A member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Inhofe says he believes the U.S. Naval Station in Cuba should remain open and that military tribunals for detainees there should continue.
On Monday, Inhofe visited the detention center with two new Republican members of the Senate panel - David Vitter of Louisiana and Richard Burr of North Carolina.
President Obama says his decision to close the Guantanamo prison will make the country safer and ensure that the government is upholding legal guarantees under the U.S. justice system.
