OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- The Oklahoma Transportation Commission has awarded the first major bid for the Interstate 44 widening project in Tulsa.

The commission Monday awarded the $42 million project to Sherwood Construction Co. The project involves an underground drainage structure and frontage road. The bid includes incentives to expedite work on the 23-month-long project.

Oklahoma Department of Transportation Director Gary Ridley says it's the biggest and single most expensive project ever put up for bid by the agency.

The widening project includes expanding traffic lanes between Riverside Drive and Yale Avenue in Tulsa from four to six and improving on and off ramps at various intersections.

Total cost of the I-44 project is about $330 million and it is scheduled for completion in 2012.
