TULSA, OK -- Tulsa Police shot and killed a gunman in east Tulsa Monday afternoon. It happened near 39th and Garnett.
Two police officers from the gang unit were patrolling the Creekside Apartments when they say they saw two men trying to hot wire an SUV.
The officers approached and the passenger started wrestling with one of the officers. That is when police noticed a gun tucked into his pants.
Officers say the suspect started running through the complex and eventually put the gun to his head threatening to kill himself.
The officers backed off, and then the armed suspect got into a pickup truck. Police say at that point they had to act.
"The individual attempts to drive away, the officer fears he's a danger to others, he had a weapon, he's already produced a gun. There's no doubt he could harm additional people," said TPD Officer Leland Ashley.
The unidentified suspect died at the scene.
As for the other suspect, he was later arrested and is now in police custody.
Police have not identified the officers involved, but officials say they are veteran officers. The officers have now been placed on routine leave, pending the results of an internal investigation by the department.
Tulsa Police are just beginning their investigation.
