Across the eastern two-thirds of the country, scattered showers and thunderstorms developed from the Northeast and Great Lakes to the Mid-Atlantic and Carolinas. Severe thunderstorms produced tornadoes in Newton Grove, NC and Spiveys Corner, NC. Hail the size of baseballs fell in Old Ford, NC with tennis ball size hail in Williamston, NC. Rainfall amounts over an inch occurred in New York and Pennsylvania. A few rain showers and thunderstorms also formed in Florida during the afternoon hours. Skies were partly cloudy with dry conditions across the Ohio Valley, Deep South, Southeast, Midwest, Mississippi Valley, and Great Plains.
In the West, afternoon showers and thunderstorms developed in the central and southern Rockies and Desert Southwest. Little rainfall was reported. A storm system pushed close to the shore of northern California and the Pacific Northwest throughout the day. Showers developed near the coast in the evening hours. Record high temperatures were set in Washington and California. Colville, WA rose to a new record of 87 degrees with La Crosse, WI rising to 92 degrees. Further south, stations in Los Angeles, CA broke new records as highs at Los Angeles International Airport hit 95 degrees while downtown reached 100. A sensor at the UCLA campus hit 98 degrees, which was also a new record.

In 1898, a hurricane struck the Georgia coast and washed away Campbell Island.
In 1981, a street in Prospect, CT was struck by lightning, which created a crater in the street. The lightning travelled through a water main into numerous buildings resulting in several water leaks.
