Nearly a decade after his brutal murder, family members of Jerard Boyce are still looking for answers. Boyce was gunned down on August 24th, 1999, and no arrests were ever made. The News On 6's Chris Wright reports Jerard Boyce's family says the anniversary of his death is always difficult, but an arrest for his murder would help ease their pain.
Jerome Boyce turned 39 earlier this month, forced to celebrate another birthday without his twin brother Jerard. He's been gone for nine years now. Jerard's body was found on a North Tulsa street on August 24th. He had been shot in the head.
"It's one of those situations where I think that was probably the single worst day of my entire life," said Jerome Boyce.
"Every time this day comes around, the 24th of August, it brings back all those memories, it kind of make me have a panic attack," said Jerard's mother, Maggie Fields.
Jerard's mother says the fact that no arrests were ever made only fuels that anxiety. The family admits that the young father was far from perfect. He had been in and out of prison, and was accused of raping a woman shortly before his death.
Police say Boyce's body was found in front of that woman's home. But his brother says the rape allegation was trumped up, and Jerard was doing his best to turn his life around.
"When he died, he was at a point in his life where he was trying to get himself together, and he was making strides to get himself together," said Jerome Boyce.
Regardless of his checkered past, his family believes that Jerard, just like any other murder victim, deserves justice. They just hope it comes before they are forced to make another somber anniversary.
"He was basically a good son. He wasn't a perfect son, but his heart was good, and he was my son," said Fields.
Besides his mother and sibling, Jerard also left behind six children.
