Route 66 enthusiasts now have another stop to make on the historic highway in Tulsa. Spectators, city leaders and members of the Oklahoma Centennial Commission celebrated the completion of the new Cyrus Avery Route 66 Centennial Plaza and Memorial Bridge on Thursday near 11th and Riverside.
The Centennial Commission and Vision 2025 project honors Cyrus Avery for his work as a Tulsa civic leader and his influence and efforts that would create the road.
"This is really the heart and soul of Route 66 and at this point is where the east and west collide, right here on the Arkansas River. So this is the most appropriate spot of all for what's taking place," said Route 66 enthusiast and author Michael Wallis.
The plaza and bridge are phase one of a larger project that includes bronze artwork and an interpretive center.
