High gas prices are forcing drivers to hop on a hog. But the shift to the bike could cost lives. The News On 6's Dan Bewley reports the concern is that first time motorcyclists are hitting the road without proper training. So now more than ever police and motorcycle safety experts are urging new bikers to spend time in the classroom.

There are no blackboard or math tables, only mufflers and handlebars for the first-time cyclists.

"Pretty much what I expected, it just takes a lot to get used to the balance but once you get used to that you're just good to go," said Alivia Olson.

This two-day course is one of dozens offered throughout the Oklahoma Rider Education Program.

"We've been learning some stopping techniques and turning and just the basic controls of the motorcycle," said Olson.

Organizers say their classes have been busier than ever this year. In some cases the classes are booked all the way to October.

"Oh absolutely, this year has been crazy," said Instructor Christopher Coombs.

Coombs says high gas prices are a big factor. More people are trading in four wheels for two and buying high-mileage scooters or bikes to save money. The problem, he says, many drivers who are new to motorcycles don't realize just how difficult it is to manage those two wheels.

"You have to use all four appendages in order to operate a motorcycle and you have to coordinate and understand what's going on before you can do that safely," said Coombs.

Police are hoping anyone who buys a bike for the first time checks out motorcycle safety courses. The students there say they're glad they did.

"I wouldn't ride a motorcycle unless I took this course first," said Charles Moore.

The cost for those classes runs between a $150 and $200.
