We're just a little over five weeks away from the opening night of the new BOK Center. It's been more than three years since they started work on the building. One Tulsa man captured the entire process on his digital camera. News On 6's Steve Berg reports the BOK Center looks very impressive from the ground. But, Richard George also had a very interesting perspective from the BOK Tower in his office on the 50th floor.
It seems like an obvious idea when you look out of Richard George's office window, to take pictures of the new BOK Center. But, it probably wasn't as obvious three years ago when there was just dirt. Fortunately, someone like George, who's both an architecture and photography buff, was thinking ahead.
"I've always liked to take pictures, nothing special but, it's always been a bit of a hobby of mine. So, it was a natural for me to bring my camera up," said Richard George with Williams Investor Relations.
He snapped 98 pictures over a span of more than 3 years. That's an average of one picture every 12 days. He took them more often when there was a lot of activity, less often when there wasn't.
"For awhile, it looked like they were going to move dirt forever. It just was the most amazing amount of earth removal and repositioning," said George. "Unless you were up high looking down on it or you drove right by it, about the first year or so, you'd hardly realize something was going on downtown."
"The steel was the fastest part," said George. "And then it was interesting to watch them put
"And my co-workers got into it and everything. ‘Hey have you taken a picture recently?' So, I'd say, ‘oh yeah, I'll bring my camera back up and take another one.'"
Now he's eager to see the finished product for the building and his pictures.
"I'm hoping it looks like one of the kind of films that, when I was child, you used to watch in science class in elementary school when a flower opened up," said George. "It's a rather organic building and of course that's one of the trends."
"And very few vertical straight lines, more of a curving, almost organic shape," said George. "I think we're getting pretty much a world-class looking center here. So, I'm pretty excited about it being done."
