Officials with the Tulsa Fire Department say Independence Day and fireworks go together, however, fireworks are dangerous and their use should be left to professionals. They say careless storage, handling, and release of fireworks can result in a significant loss of property and injury. Officials remind you, fireworks are illegal within the City of Tulsa.
The possession and discharge of fireworks is a violation of City Ordinance and could result in a fine of up to $220.00. Crews say the risk of brush, trash, and structure fire is especially high during the July 4th holiday when the illegal discharge of fireworks occurs.
Although there has been significant rainfall across the region this summer, recent severe weather events have created a large amount of dry stacked debris in or near residences. A careless ember or flame can cause this brush to ignite and involve other combustible materials. Use caution during outdoor activities such as outdoor grilling by maintaining a distance of at least 10 feet from structures and other combustible items.
Many times sparklers are thought of as "safe" fireworks. However, fire officials say the temperature of a hand-held sparkler may exceed 1200° F and can easily cause burns to the hands, face, and eyes.
In 2006, sparklers, fountains, and novelties accounted for 28% of the fireworks injuries treated in emergency rooms.
