The Tulsa County Sheriff's Office has a couple of new Toyota Tundra trucks that are turning heads. News On 6 crime reporter Lori Fullbright reports the Tundras are decked out with all the necessary law enforcement gear including light bars, radios, sheriff's office markings and a V8 engine.
The sheriff's office was looking for something with more room than its squad cars or Tahoes, so when they put out the bid process, Toyota got it and now two deputies drive Tundras.
"It has a lot of built-in extras that impress me. The braking on it is awesome, has rollover sensors so if I get into a tight situation and it's gonna roll, I have side air bags to deploy to keep me safe," said Tulsa County Sheriff's Office Deputy Jerry Quinton.
The trucks will be useful for the mounted patrol, to both pull a trailer and haul saddles. They will also be a big help for search and rescue operations. The county has its own team and also belongs to Task Force One, Regional Search and Rescue team.
"We are subject to call out and we've been on standby since the flooding. At anytime, I could have to haul four or five people plus a lot of equipment," said Deputy Quinton.
You could even see one of the big trucks behind you in your rear view mirror because they are assigned to deputies and can be used for whatever the deputies need. That includes speed enforcement, DUI enforcement and safety checks.
The Tulsa County Sheriff's Office paid $31,900 for the Tundras. That is comparable to its sport utility vehciles. They say it's important to have a fleet that can handle the many types of terrain and situations they encounter.
